Based on current forecasts, the Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) market will top $15 billion by the year 2020.  Clearly, telecom service providers worldwide are embracing the transition from hardware-centric to software-focused architectures – and for good reasons.

SS7 Alive and Well

by Jim McLaughlin

Jul 29, 2016 9:30:00 AM

With legacy circuit-switched equipment rapidly reaching retirement age, telecom service providers around the globe are focused on evolving to all-IP networks utilizing SIP and Diameter signaling, and additionally, on migrating to virtualized and cloud-based platforms. With compelling advantages that range from opex and capex cost savings to multimedia applications and service portability, all-IP Next Gen and IMS networks certainly do represent a big leap forward from the installed base of circuit-switched networks that rely on Signaling System 7 (SS7) protocols and Signaling Transfer Point (STP) switches for end-to-end connectivity.

However, despite the many compelling advantages of all-IP broadband networks, it would be premature to declare SS7 and STP’s “dead”.

The Rise of HD Voice

by Jim McLaughlin

Jun 6, 2016 10:00:00 AM

With the Global Mobile Suppliers Association reporting a total of 494 LTE-based mobile data networks commercially deployed across 162 countries, it is reasonable to expect that rollout of closely associated voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services will accelerate within the next few years.  And as these VoLTE deployments accelerate, increasing numbers of end users will experience first-hand a remarkable improvement in the clarity of voice conversations along with an improvement in the ability to understand highly accented speech.  These advantages are a direct result of VoLTE’s use of High Definition Voice (HD Voice) digital media formats.

Enabling Agility with Virtualized SBC’s [Free Trial Download]

by Jim McLaughlin

Mar 18, 2016 9:55:22 AM

With the transition to all-IP communications and IP eXchange (IPX) interconnection well underway, Session Border Controllers (SBC’s) have definitely become the workhorses of most modern communication networks today.  By providing real-time interworking for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages flowing between disparate (and often incompatible) service provider networks, SBC’s ensure the interoperability, security, and reliability of IP interconnect, VoIP wholesale, and IMS VoLTE networks around the globe.  Additionally, by supporting capabilities such as NAT traversal, IPv4 to IPv6 conversion, and real-time media format transcoding, today’s modern SBC’s have also become Swiss army knives for carrier-grade real-time communications.

Nonetheless, staying ahead in the ever evolving telecom marketplace requires more than just a Swiss army knife approach.

Essential Things for LTE North America

by Jim McLaughlin

Nov 9, 2015 10:01:51 AM

Next week, Dialogic (myself included) will be heading off to the 8th annual LTE World North America event being held on November 18th and 19th at the Dallas, Texas Intercontinental Hotel.  With North America currently being one of the world’s leading LTE markets, service providers will undoubtedly be looking to learn more about key differentiators such as VoLTE and HD voice.  Given that over 1200 attendees and 75 exhibitors participated in last year’s event, we are definitely anticipating lots of interesting discussion this year around how our IMS solutions enable both roaming and connectivity within and between VoLTE networks.

From SmartPhones to Smart Everything with IMS

by Jim McLaughlin

Oct 30, 2015 9:19:33 AM

Much has been written about the Internet of Things (IoT) and how it promises to eclipse the Internet of today by extending connectivity to billions of objects (“things”) that have been equipped with embedded sensors or robotics.  In fact, based on the current media buzz around connected lifestyles and connected homes, it would appear that the leap from smart phones to smart everything is just around the corner.

ITEXPO West Forecasts a Bright Outlook for Clouds

by Jim McLaughlin

ITEXPO entrance

I’ve just returned from the ITEXPO west conference, held in sunny Anaheim California, where Dialogic hosted an exhibitor booth, and also participated in three dynamic panel discussions.  By all measures, the event was a great success!  With informative keynotes and panel sessions that delved into current industry trends ranging from NFV to webRTC and hosted VoIP applications, it was abundantly clear that always-on real-time multimedia communications and collaboration have become the norm.  Moreover, with a significant majority of the show floor exhibitors focused on managing, distributing, growing or connecting carrier clouds in some fashion, this expo offered further proof (if any was needed) that telecom and IT are merging very, very rapidly.

A Perfect Pairing: VoLTE & Virtual IMS

by Jim McLaughlin

Sep 30, 2015 2:49:00 PM

While there might have been some doubt in the past, it is now abundantly clear that IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) core networks will be rolled out around the globe in order to support the on-going deployment of voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services.  It is also apparent that the migration to an all-IP VoLTE world will require IMS core networks to be deployed on a very large scale that will require significant investment by network operators.  For this reason, mobile service providers have been looking into the clouds, IT clouds that is, for a way to cut costs and accelerate service rollout.

VoWiFi: Risks and Rewards

by Jim McLaughlin

Sep 2, 2015 4:27:00 PM

With voice-over-Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) now natively supported by both the Apple iPhone and Android-based handsets, telecom service providers are actively evaluating the risks and rewards of this new opportunity.  In contrast to the plethora of currently available third-party over-the-top (OTT) VoIP applications, native VoWi-Fi service guarantees simplicity of use, with subscribers needing only to press the familiar green “send” button on their handsets in order to establish a call.
