My Take on Voice over WiFi

by Tim Moynihan

Aug 15, 2016 10:42:13 AM

I live in a small town outside New York City in a very densely populated area.  However, ever since I’ve had a mobile phone, I have had inconsistent mobile phone service from my wireless provider – Verizon Wireless.  When I make phone calls from my home, often I have to stand out on the back yard and find just the right location to get decent service.  And forget about LTE service.

by Tim Moynihan

There’s been quite a buzz coming out of Apple’s recent announcement about iOS 10.  What caught my eye was the part  about messaging.  Here at Dialogic we often highlight real time communications (RTC) solutions and how we can make those solutions great by working with partners.  So when I see an article in TechCrunch   with the headline “Apple’s iOS10 Finally, Truly Begins the Mobile Messaging War,” it’s something to take note of.

Cool Apps on Agenda at SpeechTek 2016

by Tim Moynihan

May 18, 2016 11:49:07 AM

I am planning my attendance to SpeechTek 2016 next week.  After reviewing the agenda, and having attended the event off and on over many, many years, I’m finding it really interesting to see how much the show has matured consistently with what is happening in the industry.  Many years ago, it was all about if, how, and when speech might take root – there were lots of fundamental technology discussions.  There has always been a lot of talk about the vision of speech applications. I think that vision has arrived….and there’s still a long way to go.

Simplifying and Scaling the Mobile VAS Ecosystem

by Tim Moynihan

Sep 28, 2015 11:12:00 AM

Over the next five years, the market for mobile value-added services (VAS) is expected to double from $330 billion to $655 billion (source: Research and Markets). For mobile service providers—both traditional network operators and virtual operators—VAS remains an important source of subscriber revenue, particularly in view of new services that can be created by combining and augmenting existing services, such as visual voicemail and video-enriched messaging. To effectively monetize these services, however, mobile service providers need be able to deploy new services quickly into the market and scale them efficiently.

IVR, You Ready for the Future?

by Tim Moynihan

Sep 14, 2015 11:18:00 AM

When smartphones began to replace traditional mobile phones, some felt it signaled the end of voice-driven communications. Among the early casualties expected were interactive voice response (IVR) systems because, truth be told, many IVR systems continue to be poorly designed. Lengthy wait times, annoying hold music, call flows that led to nowhere and routing to the wrong agents are just some of the pitfalls of the modern-day IVR.

But smartphones are actually breathing new life into the IVR experience through something called Visual IVR.

Six Strategies for More Roaming Revenue

by Tim Moynihan

Aug 31, 2015 11:35:00 AM

Roaming, to borrow a phrase, wasn’t billed in a day. Revenue from roaming subscribers is an important part of overall carrier revenue, but generating mobile roaming revenue isn’t a simple matter of setting up a wireless network and waiting for subscribers to come. More mobile carriers are competing for the same roaming subscribers, countries are increasing the number of laws and rules regulating mobile charges, and over-the-top apps are stealing market share with voice, video and messaging services. For these reasons, mobile carriers need to re-think their current roaming strategies in order to continue generating revenue from inbound and outbound roaming subscribers.

by Tim Moynihan

When 3G arrived, it was an eye-opening experience for mobile subscribers. But a religious experience? As it turns out, yes. One company, Spice Digital, is using real-time video streaming on 3G/4G devices to bring people closer to the religious experience of their choice. Based in India, Spice offers mobile network operators a suite of value-added services ranging from live broadcasts of religious prayers (known as Aartis) to downloadable devotionals.
