Pivoting to the Evolved IPX

by Thomas Schroer

May 5, 2016 9:11:06 AM

IPX operators and wholesalers are starting to pivot in their approach to providing value to mobile and fixed network operators. Their dominant customers now, mobile network operators (MNOs), are seeing significant challenges in the market place. Asset monetization has always been a concern for MNOs as they see shrinking ARPU even with increases in investment. They’re actively seeking ways to increase ARPU and figure out how to better monetize their huge investment in LTE technology and support the large amount of data being consumed over their networks. So they are looking for ways to improve their cost/revenue curves and still roll out services more quickly. IPX operators have an opportunity to help.

The Flexible App Strategy

by Jim Machi

Feb 9, 2016 1:00:00 PM

Dialogic has long been associated with communications applications.  Over the years, billions of dollars of value-added services have been enabled because an innovative, and revenue producing, application was “Built on Dialogic”.  We were the engine driving the applications.  Many of our hardware and software enabling products were and still are used in ways that we could not have imagined when we designed them.  I distinctly remember over ten years ago when a feature request came in to expand the capability of a “play/record” to what was then a huge file size.  I was like “What is this for - no one is going to talk that long”.  And no one did.  But someone had the idea to play music instead of a dial-tone, and the Color Ring Back Tone business was born, which was all at once innovative, viral, and lucrative, and for which Dialogic played a huge role.

I lost my edge, I found VoLTE, but it is getting me edgy!

by Cristina Cocco

The most popular topics during the recent IPX World Summit in London included roaming, VoLTE, and user experience – quality of service (QoS). IPX operators talked about ways to monetize their investments and looked at where the growth will come from in the next few years.

VoLTE seemed to be the “rising star” of the conference.

VoLTE, 5G and IoT Take Over LTE Asia 2015

by Thomas Schroer

Oct 26, 2015 9:49:08 AM

Asia Pacific had a relatively soft 2015 compared to other regions of the world when it came to new LTE deployments. According to the GSA, there were only 5 LTE commercial networks launched in 2015 in the APAC region. However, it is leading the way in VoLTE implementations. Of the 30 VoLTE networks currently deployed commercially, half are in that region of the world. It shouldn’t be surprising either that most of the VoLTE roaming trials and announcements have involved APAC operators. This fact did not go unnoticed at the recent LTE Asia conference in Singapore where VoLTE was a topic in majority of the presentations. Other topics discussed and presented ranged from Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) to the Internet of Things (IoT) to 5G with the likes of speakers from LG Uplus talking about the potential for targeted deployments of 5G based on customer density, usage patterns and service characteristics. In addition to some of these forward looking concepts, ways to monetize the existing 4G investment that operators have made over the past few years was also top of mind.

Goodbye Minutes, Hello Megabytes

by Thomas Schroer

Oct 19, 2015 12:47:00 PM

In an earlier blog, I was going over some of the questions that came up during a webinar that I recently did with Hot Telecom analysts Isabelle Paradis and Steve Heap on IPX Services and the Pathways to Innovation. In the first blog (which you can read by clicking here), we answered the question on the current state of VoLTE roaming where we described the two architectural approaches being deployed by service providers. One approach is known as S8HR or Home Routing where a roamer’s voice call is tunneled back to the home network’s IMS core over the S8 interface that connects the visited network’s and home network’s respective Evolved Packet Cores (EPCs). A question that came up from a very astute listener was whether that architecture was going to affect how calls are ultimately charged.

IPX Can Enable Revenue Innovation for Voice Wholesalers (Part 2)

by Jim Machi

Oct 7, 2015 3:47:00 PM

In Part 1 of this series, I wrote about a couple of revenue generating ideas for IPX providers. So how can an IPX provider go about this?  Firstly, the IPX platform needs to be up-to-date as well as support IPX standards. Obviously Dialogic provides an IPX platform or I wouldn’t be writing about this, right?

In the picture above, you can see a WebRTC Gateway and an OTT Gateway connecting to the IPX platform. Relating this to last week’s blog where I wrote about transcoding, these would be gateways that handle the voice and video media and signaling conversion required to get on and off the IPX. These gateways would need to be inserted in the path of the IPX platform.

I recently did a webinar with Hot Telecom analysts Isabelle Paradis, and Steve Heap where the topic of discussion was on IPX Services and the Pathways to Innovation. The webinar covered concepts like how IPX operators should focus on providing more than just traditional connectivity, and pointed out ways an IPX operator can add value and expand revenue

IPX Can Enable Revenue Innovation for Voice Wholesalers (Part 1)

by Jim Machi

When I attended International Telecoms Week (ITW) back in May, I wrote about how voice wholesalers are looking to expand their business and innovate. IPX is an enabler for the revenue innovation that these voice wholesalers are looking for. There are a few reasons for this.

LTE Is Not the Answer – But WiFi Might Be

by Jim Machi

May 20, 2014 7:58:00 AM

Right now, LTE is in its heyday. Carriers are doing all they can to expand coverage and improve speeds, and those lucky enough to be using it probably experience great service. But as mobile data use increases, that honeymoon period will end as networks get clogged and overloaded.
